Wii remotes not working on dk country?

when I play Donkey Kong country on the wii i am able to start the game and get as far as the player selection. then one wii remote turns off and i am only able to run one at a time. i have tried re- syncing them and turning off the console ect. but it doesn't matter what remote only one is able to be in use while on the game. please help?
